2014 Prospect Draft: Rules

The GMHL second annual Prospect Draft will commence on Sunday June 29, 2014 with a start time of 12 PM Noon EDT. If the GM with the first overall pick wants to start the draft early, he certainly can, but no GM is on-the-clock prior to 12 PM Noon EDT on June 29th.


1) Each GM will have 12 hours to make his pick. The clock starts when the pick ahead of you is made. If you have back-to-back picks, you must make both picks within the 12 hour window.

2) The clock will freeze each night between midnight and 6 AM. If it is your turn and you want to make your pick, go ahead, but you are not obligated to while the clock is frozen.

3) After you have made your pick, email, YIM and/or PM the GM with the next pick to let them know the clock has started for him.

4) If you do not think that you can make your pick within the 12 hour window, you can e-mail/PM/YIM your choice to Glenn or myself or any other GM who has offered to make the pick for you.

5) If a GM misses their pick; i.e. the 12 hour clock has expired, you can make your pick anytime after you sign back in.

6) If you miss your pick, you will only have a maximum of 6 hours to make your next pick when your turn comes up again. If you make your next pick within the 6 hour window, for your following pick, you will have the full 12 hours to make your selection.

7) If you make a mistake and pick somebody that is already on someone else's roster, the draft will continue onwards and not wait for you to fix your error. If another team(s) select before you fix your mistake, their pick will stand, so please take that extra couple of minutes to check the rosters over before you post your pick.

8) Feel free to wheel and deal with your picks; however, I would suggest that you don't wait until it is your pick to start the process of trying to find a trading partner. If you are trading your pick and use up 11 hours of your allotted time in finalizing your deal, this DOES NOT restart the clock on the pick. After 12 hours, we move on, so please plan accordingly.

9) The signing of any farm eligible player to your Pro or Farm team during the Prospect or the 1 round FA draft is not allowed until after both drafts have completed. The FA draft will commence immediately after the Prospect Draft has ended.

A slight clarification is in order here guys. You can add any player to your roster up until the official commencement of the draft, except players that will be available for this year's draft; i.e. you can't add an Ekblad or Dal Colle.

Once the Sunday noon official start to the draft begins, you cannot add any farm eligible players to your team.

Once the 1 round FA draft begins, you cannot add anyone else to fill out your roster until the FA draft ends.

Once the FA draft ends, there will be a day or two where no additions will be allowed and then FA will open up again. This keeps it fair to anyone contemplating adding additional players.

But once FA opens again you cannot add a player unless your roster is at 47/47, right? Like after the draft most teams will be at like 48-50/47...probably.

correct, once FA reopens, if you want to add players you need to get roster complient first.

Ahh... not quite guys. I made a post on April 25th from the following link:

Please note that the roster limits of 26 Pro and 18 farm remain in place until after the entry and FA drafts this summer. However, like last year, if you acquire additional assets in your trades or during the drafts, you can keep these extra players on your team until just before the 2014-15 season begins.

What this means is that after the FA draft has completed, the number of players will stay at whatever amount you have, unless you acquire or lose more players in a trade. For example, if after the draft you have 53 players on your team, you can stay at the number until we have to become roster compliant, which will be just before the 2014-15 season begins.

All teams will need to be roster compliant by Saturday October 4th at 12 PM noon EDT. The season is due to kick off on October 8th, so this gives me a couple of days to tweak everyone's lineup and make sure everyone is ready to go.

After the season begins, being roster compliant will mean that you can have up to 47 players on your team, of which no more than 27 of these players maximum are intended for your Pro roster; in other words, 27 players who are not farm eligible.

Until October 4th, you can add or drop players as you see fit as long as for every player you pick up, you also drop a player.

For example, you've just discovered that the Schmö brothers, Joe and Mo, from the Czech Republic, and their lesser known cousin Eddie, from Pardubice, are all considering coming to the NHL for the beginning of the 2014-15 season. You've wanted the Schmö brothers on your team for some time now, but not cousin Eddie, because you're not too keen on a hockey player's development from East Bohemia. You simply add the two Schmö brothers and drop two other players from your roster.

Dropping down to 47 players just to pick up another asset seems a little bit like overkill to me and kinda defeats the whole purpose of acquiring extra assets in the first place.

Thanks for blowing the lid off me secret weapons. I've been watching The Schmoes since I saw them in exhibition against the Meepos Goat Herders and was just waiting to pick them up during the draft. Now I'll have to trade to jump ahead of the Isotopes to make sure Anthony doesn't get them before I do.
At least ya didn't expose the fact that their cousin Eddie Ahmantahugnkiz is a top tier goalie over there as well. His gear doesn't match and is made of old telephone books (cuz who uses them anymore) but he shut out the Jamaican team last week (mainly cuz they couldn't find a puck and used a beach ball instead) but hey a goose egg's a goose egg right.
I just hope they don't get drafted by a team from Quebec cuz it's expected that Carl Lindros is representing them as their agent and we all know how many Stanley Cups his high end clients have won right?
But yeah listen to Steve and mind yer rosters.

Just so that everyone is clear on the rosters once we start the season, the maximum players on your team will be 47, of which no more than 27 are not eligible for your team (only Pro). As long as you don't exceed the 47 players total and the 27 Pro designated players, you can build your team as you see fit.

In other words if you want to carry 24 Pro players and 23 Farm players, that is fine because you are still at the maximum of 47 players on your team and you are still at 27 or less Pro designated players.

If your team was configured with 24 Pro and 23 Farm players, you would be able to stream players from your farm to those 3 slots available to your team on the league's Yahoo page.

You can use any combination of Pro and Farm team players to build your team as long as you don't exceed 47 players total and 27 Pro.

I hope this clears it up for everybody. If you need more clarification, just ask.
