I hope that everyone can take the time in the next day or two to vote on this important question. We are downsizing to 14 teams for this season.
The question before us is:
- Do we stay at 14 teams for the long term health of the league?
- Do we have an expansion draft to bring us back to 16 teams?
If we stay at 14 teams, we should have a pretty strong league with no really bad teams. There will be a lot of FA available and all teams should be able to take advantage of players that break out. All teams would also have an easier time finding a decent replacement player if a player on their team goes on the IR.
With 14 teams, this should allow us to easily go to 2 G positions per team, which is what I think most teams may be interested in doing. 1 G position per team places less emphasis on G stats and allows every team to compete relatively easily against all teams.
2 G per team in a 14 team league makes the G position quite a bit more important and really impacts your team's possible overall success. Most team's already have 2 starters and there will be a distinct lack of available talent for any team without 2 starters.
If we're going to 2 G, we need to decide this now, before we do a dispersal draft of the 2 teams were disbanding so that everyone can plan appropriately for next year. If we do add a goalie position, this will not be implemented until next year, the 2014-15 season.
If you guys want to go back to 16 teams, then we'll have to have an expansion draft. If we're expanding then the 2 new teams need access to some pretty decent talent, or no one would bother even joining our league.
I would say that each team could only protect 10 players max on their pro team and it would have to be done so that players are available at all positions.
If we expand, then each team could only protect 2C, 2LW, 2RW, 3D and 1G from your Pro team. The maximum amount of players a team could lose would be limited to 3, with no more than 1 G and 1 D allowed to be taken from your team.
For the Farm team, each team would be able to protect a maximum of 8 prospects and the most prospects you could lose would be 2.
These are only my initial thoughts, but I think that would be the best way to do an expansion draft, if that is what you guys prefer.
So, what do you guys prefer. Please make your choice above. Any comments, thoughts and ideas are welcome.
