Not at all. What we did last year is run the random draft order generator at fftoolbox
draft order generator to match up the six non-playoff teams with the bottom six teams in the NHL.
If the NHL standings stay as they currently are through the end of the season, that would mean that all the non-playoff teams would have a one-in-six chance of being matched up with Arizona and a one-in-five chance of being matched up with Buffalo, and so on.
As we saw last year, there is no guarantee who the first three picks will go to as Philadelphia moved way up to pick Nolan Patrick second in last summer's Entry Draft.
If our order stays the same through the end of our regular season, that is, after next week's matchups, then the worse that TopShelf can do is pick third this upcoming summer.
I would suggest that to take out some of the randomness that you would get in using the draft order generator on fftoolbox once, is that each of the co-commissioners uses this tool and we compile the results from all three draft orders that are generated.
For reference purposes, here are the rules on the draft lottery from the rules page:
Part 6 - GMHL Draft Lottery:The NHL Draft Lottery will be used to select the teams that will have the best chance to pick 1st and 2nd overall in the 1st round of our Entry Draft. This will be a modified version of how the NHL conducts its Draft Lottery.
Please note that it is only the picks from the six non-playoff teams that are eligible for the best chance at the 1st and 2nd overall picks in the Entry Draft. If the official NHL Draft Lottery selects the 7th last or higher placed team as the lottery winner, then we will just go with the reverse order of the GMHL regular season for the Entry Draft order.
For the best chance at the 1st overall pick, the six non-playoff teams will be selected in a random manner by a Fantasy Draft Order Generator, such as found on fftoolbox (
fftoolbox.scout.com/draft_order_generator.cfm) and assigned according to the reverse order of the NHL final regular season standings. This means that the winner from fftoolbox would be assigned the worst NHL team and so on.
For the best chance at the second overall pick, we will use fftoolbox a second time to determine the order of placement for the 5 remaining non-playoff teams, just as we did for the best chance at the first pick.
The NHL Draft Lottery will then decide their 1st and 2nd overall picks. Each GMHL team that misses the playoffs will have a 1 in 6 chance of obtaining the 1st overall pick in the Entry Draft and a 1 in 5 chance of obtaining the 2nd overall pick. The last placed team's first-round pick in the GMHL Entry Draft will likely have no worse than the 3rd pick overall.
If you're a playoff bubble team and we (Ryan, Mike and I) determine that you're tanking on purpose to get into the Draft Lottery, you will automatically be eliminated from having an opportunity to obtain the 1st or 2nd overall pick.
